An in-depth review of Atlassian Intelligence in Cloud to highlight the AI features for Jira & Confluence to increase efficiency and most importantly accelerate your work with the assistance of AI:
Artificial Intelligence, as everyone knows, involves creating systems to do tasks previously done by humans. Some activities like learning, logic, creativity, etc which were being done by humans or required human intelligence, are now being done by AI.
Examples include ChatBots or the live chats, Google AI, Bard, and ChatGPT. There is enough information on AI on the internet which I will not go through.

Atlassian Intelligence in Cloud: Detailed Guide
In this article, we will focus on AI which is Atlassian Intelligence, a new feature introduced in Atlassian Cloud products. Atlassian Intelligence helps to increase efficiency, generate and transform content, find data faster, summarize critical data, and more. We will look to explore this feature in Jira and Confluence Cloud products in this article.
How does Atlassian Intelligence Work
Atlassian Intelligence is a combination of OpenAI and the data on the Atlassian platforms. So, within the Atlassian platform, there is a native artificial intelligence provided for the teams that is contextual and respects privacy. It also means that OpenAI does not store any data that is submitted or any responses received.
How to Activate Atlassian Intelligence for a Product
To use the AI features, go to the site administration settings and activate Atlassian Intelligence. Go to Settings -> Atlassian Intelligence and select products to enable this feature. Save to confirm.
Note: You must be an organization admin to enable this feature.
Atlassian Intelligence in Jira
We will look at the below aspects as examples to use Atlassian Intelligence to get the context faster in Jira. The primary aim is to accelerate work.
- Search Issues: Use the natural language to prompt you to find the issues you need instead of writing complex queries. AI will then translate these prompts to JQL queries to search for your issues.
- Generate and Transform Content: Add new content in issue descriptions and comments with the prompts. Also, you can transform content to make technical information easier to understand
Where to find the feature?
Once the Atlassian Intelligence feature is activated, open your Jira project and click on the Issues section -> AI
Search Issues
Let’s look at some examples of searching issues faster using the AI feature.
Example #1: Enter a text like “Find issues in the SSP project assigned to me”. Click on Go.
The JQL query is then constructed accordingly.
Example #2: Find issues in the SSP project that were created in the last 15 days.
Example #3: Find issues in the SSP project that do not have an assignee.
Example #4: Which story items in the SSP project are in progress.
Example #5: List bugs in the SSP project in medium priority.
Example #6: Story issues in the SSP project updated by me this month.
Generate and Transform Contents
Let’s look at how to generate and transform the contents for a particular topic in the issue description and comments.
Open a story issue and in the issue’s description, type a sentence.
Click on the Atlassian Intelligence icon and click on Summarize writing.
You can then choose Insert below in the description. Content is added in the description.
Let’s look at the option “Make shorter”.
Brainstorm on a topic.
You can also type /ai in the description to get the options.
Enter a topic to Brainstorm.
Change tone to educational
Similarly, other options can also be explored based on the need. Atlassian Intelligence works well when you query in English and query based on the issue fields and values of the particular Jira project.
Atlassian Intelligence only functions for searching Jira issues, projects, or users. If you’re seeking information about individuals or locations, it won’t be effective.
Atlassian Intelligence in Confluence
Using Atlassian Intelligence in Confluence can help to improve your writing and also streamline your work. With the Atlassian Intelligence feature, you can do the following:
- Obtain work details faster by summarizing pages and blogs
- Search answers
- Define terms
- Generate and transform contents
Summarize the Pages and Blogs
Example #1: Create a confluence space and add a text to summarize the content. Click on the Atlassian Intelligence icon
Click on “Summarize writing”.
You can then Insert the contents into the space. The content generation was truly faster and more accurate.
Example #2: Let’s assume you created a blank page and added the content about GitLab. We can ask Atlassian Intelligence to “Suggest a Title for the page”. Click on the Atlassian Intelligence icon and select the option “Suggest a title”.
A title is then suggested. Copy the title and add it to the top.
You can then explore the other features which are similar to the ones seen in the Jira section.
Search for Answers
You can search for information faster. In the Search bar, type “GitLab” and click on the Ask AI icon. You can use the link in the Source section below to navigate to the page.
Define the Terms
Sometimes there is a need to understand the context in a Confluence page while reading. Atlassian Intelligence can do it faster to define the specific terms without using a search site.
This feature can be used only while reading and not during editing.
Double-click on the word and select “Define”. The definition is then displayed.
Generate and Transform Contents
Use Atlassian Intelligence to generate new content and transform it. In the below example, in a confluence space add a line and use the AI icon to Summarize writing.
Here is another example to find action items. In a confluence space add the following Tasks and use AI to find action items.
Enter /ai below and choose the option “Find action items”.
It will display the below as the macro.
Other options can also be explored as they are easy to understand.
Conclusion
