This tutorial explains what a .BIN file is, how to open BIN files with or without using a program, how to convert BIN to ISO, and the best apps to open and read .BIN files on your PC.

You may have come across the .BIN file extension and wondered what a BIN file is and why it is used. BIN files are commonly used to store binary data such as disk images, game files, or installation data.

In this guide, I will explain what a BIN file is, why it’s used, and how you can open BIN files safely on your computer. I’ll also help you choose the right .BIN file opener for PC, so you can open, view, or read BIN files without risking data loss.

How to Open BIN File

What is a BIN File

BIN files hold data as binary files, meaning that the files hold data as bytes and not as text or media files. The BIN files can be created when software requires data to be stored in a particular format.

The files are organized to be readable by computer programs and thus cannot be opened by double-clicking, as the computer would not react or would display data that is unreadable to the user.

Commonly, BIN files are found in the form of disc images; these are copies of CDs or DVDs that are used for the installation of software and playing games, as well as for the storage of data.

These images are usually linked to CUE file formats that offer instructions on how the data can be read and processed. Apart from images, BIN files can be linked to software for old applications, ROM data for old gaming consoles, and firmware for cameras and other devices, such as routers and televisions.

.BIN Files On Android

Android Package format, also known as APK is the format of the Android applications. But sometimes, due to an error, APK files are saved as BIN. In these cases, you can’t install or open the file without some additional steps i.e. using a third party application. It is a good thing that there are some easy to install and use applications to manage the BIN file.

How to Open BIN Files without a BIN File Opener

There are three ways to open a BIN file without using a program. These are:

  1. Burning the file.
  2. Mounting the Image
  3. Converting BIN to ISO Format

#1) Burning a BIN File to CD or DVD

Burning a BIN file

Burning a BIN File to CD or DVD

  • To burn a BIN file, you usually need its CUE file.
  • If you don’t have a CUE file, you can create one easily using Notepad.

Steps to create a CUE file:

  • Open Notepad and type:
    FILE “filename.bin” BINARY
  • Replace filename.bin with the actual name of your BIN file (keep the quotation marks).
  • On the next line, type: TRACK 01 MODE1/2352
  • On the line below that, type: INDEX 01 00:00:00
  • Save the file in the same folder as the BIN file.
  • Give it the same name as the BIN file, but change the extension to .CUE.

Here is a video for creating a CUE File in Notepad

Burning the BIN file:

  • Choose a disc-burning program that supports BIN files. Since BIN is an older format, tools like Nero, CDRWIN, or Alcohol 120% work best.
  • Depending on the software, load either the CUE file or the BIN file.
  • The program will show how much disc space the image requires.
  • Insert a blank CD or DVD and start the burning process.
  • Once burning is complete, test the disc on the device it was created for.

Final check: Make sure the disc loads correctly and verify that all tracks are present and in the correct order.

#2) Mounting the BIN Image File

Mounting the image

  • To mount a BIN image, you need virtual drive software that acts like a physical CD or DVD drive on your system.
  • This software tricks your computer into thinking a real disc has been inserted, allowing the image to run just like a CD or DVD.

Choosing a virtual drive tool:

  • There are many virtual drive programs available, but WinCDEmu is one of the most popular free options.
  • While installing WinCDEmu, pay close attention to the setup screens, as it may try to install extra software or browser toolbars that you don’t need.

Important things to note:

  • Mounting will only work if the image is compatible with your operating system.
  • Windows 8 and macOS already have built-in virtual drive support, but in most cases, you’ll need to convert the BIN file to ISO first.

Steps to mount the image:

  • After installing the virtual drive software, you’ll see a virtual drive icon on your desktop or system tray.
  • Right-click the icon and hover over one of the virtual (fake) drives.
  • Select the Mount Image option.
  • Browse to the location of the CUE file and select it to mount the image.

After mounting:

  • Once mounted, your system will behave as if a physical disc has been inserted.
  • AutoPlay may open automatically.
  • When prompted, use the image just like you would use a CD or DVD inserted into your computer.

#3) Convert BIN To ISO Format

Converting a BIN File to ISO Format

Converting BIN to ISO Format

  • Another way to open a BIN file is to convert it into an ISO file.
  • To do this, you’ll need a BIN-to-ISO conversion program.

Steps to convert BIN to ISO:

  • Open your chosen conversion tool.
  • From the menu, select the BIN to ISO conversion option.
  • Browse and select the BIN file you want to convert.
  • Choose a name and location for the new ISO file.
  • Click Convert to start the process.

After conversion:

  • Once the conversion is complete, the ISO file can be used with many more tools.
  • You can mount the ISO using virtual drive software.
  • Or, you can burn the ISO to a CD or DVD using any standard disc-burning program.
